Postcard Costume

My friends and I were struggling to come up with Halloween costume ideas this year. We were all in the kitchen talking when I was inspired by our postcard collection on our fridge. If you are looking for an inexpensive and creative costume this may be perfect for you!

What You Need:

  • White Foam Poster Board
  • Box Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Black Puffy Paint
  • Variety of Paint Brushes
  • Variety of Paint Colors
  • Thick Black Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Stapler
  • Black Pen
  • 8 x 10 Colored Paper

Step 1: Make the Postcard Shape

Using the ruler, measure and mark the halfway point on the poster board. Draw a line to help you cut a straight line. Using the box cutter, cut the poster board in half.

Step 2: Design the Front of the Postcard

Take one half of the poster board and lightly sketch the postcard image. You can use an actual postcard, photo or online image as inspiration. After sketching, paint the image. Add the country or city name last. Set aside and let it dry.

Step 3: Make the Stamp

Cut the colored sheet of paper into a rectangle. You can make the edges uneven to make it look more authentic. Paint a small image and write a price in the corner. Set aside and let it dry.

Step 4: Write the Message

On the other poster board, lightly sketch a line down the middle dividing the card. This will help you visualize how much space you have for the message and the address. Write a message in pencil leaving blanks to be filled in by someone else (  similar to Mad Libs). Make sure to check the spelling before puffy painting the message!

Step 5:  Address the Postcard

In pencil, write a fake address on the right side. Glue the stamp in the top right corner then puffy paint the address.

Step 6: Attach the Two Sides

You will need two ribbons to attach the front and back of the postcard. Measure the length of ribbon you want to go over your shoulders. Attach the ribbon to the right and left corners using glue. Make sure the ribbon is not twisted, and the posters are facing the right way! Let the glue dry for a little while. Then staple the glued ribbon to add some more support.

Step 7: Show it Off!

Wearing all black will make the postcards stand out. Make sure to bring a pen and ask your friends to fill in the blanks to complete the message.
